In the First round of the Challenge Cup, Salisbury City caught the eye with the demolition of a plucky Alresford Town side, writes Alan Johns. Alresford, a Division 4 side, knew this would be a tough game as they hosted the Division 1 team two weeks ago in the Hampshire Cup. With no substitutes, the Alresford eleven dug in from the whistle but by half time the score was 5-0. Keeper George Long was kept extremely busy throughout this game but Alresford did have some chances themselves. Half way through the second half, Town were reduced to ten men and sportingly Salisbury took off one of their players to even things out. The game ended 16-0 to Salisbury but Town were justifiably very proud of the performance they put in as they had a bare eleven players and faced a real battle on a very hot day. Salisbury’s goalscorers were Jack Spratt with four, a hat-trick from Eddie Cottle, two-apiece from Jack Aldridge and Josh Gregory and one each from Ben Brown, Josh Bennett, Dean Spreadbury, Rob Fisher and Rory Collins. Other high-scorers included City Central who continued their recent good form with a 9-0 win over S&D and Clarendon Juniors put six past Baddesley Park at the expense of a single goal in reply. Romsey Town were 5-0 winners against Sky Blues and Eastleigh travelled to New Milton Town Robins and won by the same margin.
Winchester crashed out of the League Cup at the first hurdle after this defeat to a strong VT Youth. The home side got into their stride from the start and within 5 minutes they were a goal in front. Winchester were struggling to make an impact as their opponents, who looked sharper, carved out more chances and it was no surprise when a second goal came midway through the half. Eventually Winchester started to make an impression on the game and forced a series of corners and free kicks around the box. VT were composed in defence though and kept the visitors at bay till the break. The second-half got off to a lively start when in the first minute Ryan Williams latched on to a through ball and finished well to make it 2-1. The revival was short-lived though as straight from the re-start VT strolled through the Winchester defence to restore their two goal lead. Soon after it got worse as a 4th goal from VT followed. Winchester kept competing however and chances were created but VT were always a threat on the break and a fifth goal then hit the back of the visitors net. With time running out Felix Laing headed a George Harper corner home to make it 5-2. Harper then looked to have got a third for Winchester when he curled a free kick past the keeper; however it was disallowed by the Ref who had indicated an indirect kick. Winchester had some good individual performances, notably Umar Chaudry and Matt Holbrook but they were ultimately out-classed by a much better team effort from VT.
QK (Southampton) won 5-1 at Hedge End Rangers Blues and AFC Totton won 4-0 at Wellow. Totton began brightly and were soon creating many chances and a clever flick from Fricker saw D. Smith slip the ball past the Wellow 'keeper to open the scoring. Speedy Totton defender TJ then hit a 20 yard thunderbolt into the roof of the Totton net after a neat pass from D.Smith. A pacy run down the left flank then saw Griffiths release Smith to score his second and Totton's third. The Totton strikers were linking up well and it seemed that more goals would come. Four goals ahead at the break, Totton resumed brightly but Wellow seemed to have weathered the early Totton pressure and were now moving the ball around themselves in midfield. With their defence holding firm, the second-half was a close affair with both teams playing tight, compact, competitive football. Totton missed several chances to extend their lead but finally made the match safe midway through the second-half when Fricker met a cross from Crisp to head home to make it 4-0. Wellow continued to provide stern opposition in the centre of the pitch but Totton defended well to keep a clean-sheet and progress to the next round.

Elsewhere, Testwood United lost 4-2 at home to Marchwood Rangers, AFC Stoneham Youth ‘One’ won 4-3 at Itchen Tyro, but their ‘Two’ team lost 2-1 to visitors Hamble Club. Eastleigh Spitfires won 3-2 at Bitterne Rangers and Botley Village went down 3-0 to Hedge End Rangers in what was almost exclusively a Wildern School affair, with the majority of the players being pupils there. Hedge End, from Division 2 were unlikely to offer their local rivals, from two division below them, any opportunity for a giant-killing with bragging rights at stake. Botley showed a lot of spirit but Hedge End created the better chances and deserved to go in at half time 2-0 up with goals from Luke Palmer and Steve Sharp. Some very good saves from the Botley keeper kept the score down and a strong Hedge End defence stopped Botley from creating many chances. The second half was very scrappy at times and although Hedge End remained strong, Botley did put some good passing together and almost scored towards the end. A third goal after great skill was put away from Connor Anderson to complete a 3-0 victory for the away team, sending them happily back to school on Monday morning.
Hamble United hosted Mich & Tims and the away side took the lead through Sam Draycott and Jack Bransgroe added a second from a free kick. Jake Bessant replied for Hamble replied for Hamble before half-time. Hamble seemed to find their footing in the second-half and scored another two goals through Jake Bessant and Jordon Grant’s goal of the match to make it 3-2 to Hamble. Aldermoor and Burridge was a very evenly matched first half with not many chances on goal. Burridge managed to put the ball in the net on 12 minutes when Will Candy struck a shot from just outside the box., but much of the play centered around the middle of the pitch. The second half was more end to end with Ollie Bell making several brilliant saves to keep Aldermoor at bay. In the 75th minute Burridge stuck again with a great run by James Richardson beating two players and a strong challenge to slot the ball home. Burridge then started to pile on the pressure as confidence grew and in the 79th minute struck again with Alex Lawson's free kick hitting the cross bar and Richardson heading home for his second. Final score was 3-0 to Burridge, but Ryan Ship put in a good performance for the losers, whose lack of self-discipline contributed to their downfall. Alderbury beat Bashley 2-1 in a close game in the remaining fixture.
