FC Widnes Development & Youth Profile

Widnes FC – Development & Youth

About the Club & History:

Widnes FC – Development & Youth are a FA Members Status Community Standard Club based in the town of Widnes.

The club was formed in February 2003 under the name of Dragons FC with the aim of making football fun by teaching new skills and developing self-confidence in the local community’s children. These core values remain today with our aim to make football accessible and enjoyable whilst instilling a pride and passion in our players to represent the club.

Over the years the club has evolved from its humble beginnings to a premier provider of football to the Widnes and Halton area. During this time we have developed an excellent reputation within the local community for our contributions towards the development of grass roots football in the Halton area. Currently we provide football from our soccer school through to youth football and open age offering football to more than 200 players within the Borough.

Recently the club has introduced a girls section with the hope of developing all girl teams to represent the club in the future. The club has decided this should be an entirely female venture and are therefore developing female coaches to run these potential teams.

The standard of the club was recognised for our contributions to local football when we achieved the FA Charted Standard award in December 2003, the first to achieve this accolade within Halton. As the club continued to develop we achieved Charter Standard Development Status in 2008 for the continuous development of grassroots football before successfully becoming affiliated as a Community Status Club in 2012.

The club believes in rewarding our players and celebrating their achievements with annual presentations. Over the years these events have been held at several prestigious venues such as Goodison Park, The Etihad Stadium and the Stobart Stadium to increase the sense of achievement felt by our players. This is an ethos the club continues to promote with future events planned for exciting venues.

During the clubs development our branding and name has evolved as partnerships have been formed to enhance our status. Widnes Dragons became Widnes Vikings FC before rebranding as Widnes FC in 2014.

At this juncture the club decided to separate the Junior and Youth Sections from the Open Age first team with the title of Widnes FC – Development & Youth being bestowed on the original club whilst adopting the nickname of “ Dragons “.  This further change enabled us to enhance our reputation as a place for children to develop their footballing and social skills in a safe and secure environment.

In preparation for the 2016 / 2017 Season the development section committee of the club decided to develop a badge specifically for our players to associate to their club. The new badge represents our future whilst incorporating elements of our past with a dragon once again prominent on the bow of a Viking ship. This new identity moves the club into a new era with players past and future identifying with the Dragon trademark of our club.
