Ashton Athletic Profile

Ashton Athletic Football Club was founded in 1968 and played in the Wigan Sunday League – winning every division in consecutive seasons and many cup competitions before switching to the Warrington League on Saturdays where similar success was sustained.

The club developed Brocstedes Park and was admitted to the Lancashire Combination, before becoming a founder member of the North West Counties League when the Combination merged with the Cheshire League in 1982.  Unfortunately, financial restraints prevented the required ground improvements to be completed, and the club was relegated into the Manchester League, Division One in 1986.  The drop of two leagues resulted in the majority of playing staff moving to other clubs and for numerous years the club endeavoured to rebuild.  Players came and went lacking the club loyalty that had brought success to the club in the 1970’s and 80’s until the committee embraced an ambitious youth policy in 1999.

Fourteen years ago the club had only two teams, 50 members and one mediocre pitch with a dilapidated club house and changing rooms.   With the help from external grant sources the committee worked hard to make a series of improvements and it saw the clubs re-entry in the NWCFL in time for the 2006/07 season.

The 2008/09 season saw a further progression of the club having been promoted to the Premier Division of the North West Counties League and being accepted into the national stage of the FA Cup Competition, having done so well in the FA Vase and having retained the Atherton Charity Cup at the end of the season.

In May 2013 the club were awarded FA Charter Standard Club Status.

This seasons sees the First Team playing in the Premier Division of the North West Counties League, with the Development Team in the Galaxy League and the U18s in the North West Youth Alliance.

We also welcome our first girls team into the Youth Section who will playing in the West Lancashire Girls League, with the other age groups playing in the Warrington Junior Football League and the Wigan Youth Football League.  We run an Academy for preschool and reception children on a Saturday morning.

The club is a voluntary organisation run by a committee of 16 alongside approximately 25 coaches and managers.  The club now has a total membership of over 200 with 11 youth teams who take advantage of our excellent facilities.  In addition to the two open age teams, we also have a veterans team who play past players of Wigan Athletic in an annual challenge match.

The Committee, Managers and a number of volunteers have been working tirelessly since the end of last season to enhance and improve the facilities of the club.  There has been a lot of work going on with everyone getting involved.  We are keen to maintain the pace of development and future plans which will enable increased activity at the club.

For season 2015/16 we have formed a long-term partnership with Coaching Connexions Ltd to form our own full time football and education academy for 16-18 year olds.  The boys will take BTEC Level 3 extended diploma in Sport (equivalent 3 A levels). The academy boys will represent the club in the British College League and the Northwest Youth Alliance.
